I have over 30 years of teaching and leadership experience in a variety of different schools and settings. I have worked at all levels in secondary education from classroom teacher to secondary headteacher, always with a passion for supporting children as far as possible on their educational journeys and in their personal development. I have taught across the range of subjects and across Key Stages 1-5. I am widely experienced in 1:1 and small group teaching and have a strong appreciation of how individual teaching can impact very positively on the progress of young people. I have developed programmes for 1:1 teaching in schools and led the implementation of these to help students with different needs to be able to realise their potential. In this work, I have taught and tutored students with a wide range of additional needs. This has helped me to develop my teaching skills further and allowed me to continue to improve my practice.
My skills and experience working with students with autism: I have worked extensively with students of different ages with autism both in school and in alternative settings. It is vital to appreciate that the learning needs for individuals are always different and I tailor my approach to suit the people I am working with. I read widely on autism, as well as other additional needs and use this knowledge, as well as training, to inform my tutoring. I use clear and concise approaches, breaking tasks down and always try to make lessons interesting, rigorous and fun.
My skills and experience working with students with ADHD: I put relationship building at the centre of my work with students with ADHD. Ensuring clear ways of working and a positive, ‘can-do’ approach are really important for success. By emphasising the strengths and interests of the student and using those to assist curriculum design, much more is achieved.
My skills and experience working with students lacking confidence: If students aren’t given positive feedback, it is much more difficult to help them improve and be successful. I know this from my own career in teaching and have developed an approach with youngsters which helps them to celebrate the good things about their work and to further build on these. Most young people find it easier to relate to someone who can identify the positives in their work and efforts and I base my teaching on this. It helps them go on to more success.
My experience working with students on revision techniques: I can help students with organising their revision timetables and ensuring they follow them. I am also experienced with supporting youngsters on work schedules so that they revise effectively and build in time for relaxation, which is important during exam time. I adapt revision methods for individual students and I provide exam preparation help with GCSE and A Level History and Sociology and Foundation Level GCSE Maths
