Special Educational Needs (SEN) friendly summer kids activities

Special Educational Needs friendly summer kids activities

For families with Autism or Special Educational Needs (SEN) there are plenty of exciting places to spend your summer days in London this August.  Here is our pick of the most popular things to do to have a SENsational summer in the city.

SEN MUSEUM MORNINGS

For families with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the London Transport Museum is opening its doors outside regular hours on 25 August.  Kids can explore the Museum and get hands-on with genuine parts of transport history without the sensory overload.  Children and young people under 18 go free.

SEN FRIENDLY CINEMA SCREENINGS

Escape the heat and busy city sounds.  Throughout August a trip to an Odeon, Vue and Cineworld screen is now more accessible for children with SEN. Special monthly screenings have been launched for families with SEN. Lights are kept on during screenings, trailers are cut off and sound effects are toned down for an overall more relaxed atmosphere.

SEN STORYTELLING IN STRATFORD

Described as one of London Stratford’s best kept secrets for kids, Discover Children’s Story Centre is perfect for families to enjoy playing, learning and making up stories together.  All storytelling sessions in August are led by dynamic Story Builders who support children with SEN. They use creative techniques to interact with children using auditory, visual and kinaesthetic  communication.

SEN CLAY WORKSHOP

For the little artists in your lives the V&A is running a creative family workshop for children with special educational needs and disabilities on 20th August. Artist-duo Kaleidoworks will help you create your own sensory clay object to enjoy and take home with you. Book in advance.

SEN FRIENDLY FUN IN LONDON

HD Carers Support Group and Oak Wood School in Hillingdon have teamed up to host a SEN Summer Fun Day on 22nd August.  Enjoy a day of SEN fun galore. Bouncy castles, Sensory Zones, FREE sports activities, food stalls and more.  Under 3’s and adults go free.
