I am an accomplished English teacher with over 15 years dedicated to achieving positive outcomes for pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Having spent 10 years teaching at an outstanding FE College, I have been privileged to deliver high standards of teaching and learning to a diverse range of pupils. My role has extended beyond the classroom, having also served as a GCSE Examiner, Advanced Practitioner, and Leader in Learning. I currently work as an English Education Specialist, designing, developing, and delivering CPD training courses and programmes for FE English teachers, specifically those teaching GCSE and Functional Skills. Over the years, I have supported pupils with autism, anxiety, dyslexia, ADHD, SEMH needs, speech and language difficulties, trauma, epilepsy, visual and hearing impairments, and brain injuries, while also creating and delivering CPD training to help teachers enhance their classroom support for pupils with SEN.

About Me
Skills & Experience
I have a proven track record of achieving positive outcomes for a diverse range of pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Having taught at an outstanding Further Education (FE) College, I consistently delivered engaging lessons that met high standards of teaching and learning, with the majority of my lessons being graded as outstanding.
Before completing my PGCE and becoming a classroom teacher, I worked in a residential care home for men on the autism spectrum. I adhered to care plans, performed routine sanitisation tasks, and provided comprehensive support with meal assistance, mobility and all aspects of personal care. This experience enhanced my ability to build strong, trusting relationships with individuals requiring continuous support and care. I would also routinely take service users to the local college to provide them with 1:1 support in the classroom when engaging with learning.
My specialist experience working with young people with SEN to develop trusting and meaningful relationships
With over 15 years of experience as an English teacher, I have worked extensively with young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), developing trusting and meaningful relationships to support their learning. My approach has always been student-centred, ensuring that every learner feels valued, understood, and supported. I am now an English Education Specialist, where I design, develop, and deliver CPD training courses for English teachers, including training on inclusion and SEN adaptations. This role allows me to share expertise with teachers nationwide, while drawing on my years of direct classroom experience to ensure my methods remain practical, effective, and inclusive.
My experience working with young people with ADD/ADHD
I have significant experience supporting students with ADD, helping them to manage focus, concentration, and organisation challenges. I use clear, structured instructions and break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to reduce overwhelm. Where appropriate, I integrate movement, visual prompts, and regular check-ins to maintain engagement. I also explicitly teach strategies for managing distractions and improving working memory, which helps students feel more in control of their learning. My calm, patient, and encouraging approach allows students with ADD to build confidence while making steady academic progress.
My experience working with young people with dysgraphia
Supporting students with dysgraphia has been an important part of my teaching practice. I use multisensory and scaffolded approaches to help students express their ideas clearly without the barrier of handwriting difficulties. This might include the use of assistive technology, typing, graphic organisers, or oral rehearsal before writing. I focus on building confidence in written expression, showing students that their creativity and ideas matter just as much as the mechanics of writing. By removing barriers and providing personalised strategies, I help learners with dysgraphia develop practical skills and feel more positive about their writing.
My experience in teaching GCSE English
As a highly experienced GCSE English teacher and former AQA Examiner, I have a deep understanding of exam requirements and marking criteria. I use this expertise to help students focus on what matters most in their assessments, giving them clear strategies for success. I provide structured support with reading, writing, analysis, and exam technique, ensuring that students not only gain the skills they need but also the confidence to apply them under timed conditions. In my current role as an English Education Specialist, I also design and deliver training for teachers delivering GCSE and Functional Skills, including practical strategies to make English more accessible for learners with SEN.
My experience developing confidence and self-esteem
Building students’ confidence and self-esteem is at the heart of my teaching practice. Many young people with SEN can feel disheartened or anxious about learning, particularly in subjects such as English. I create a supportive and positive environment where students feel safe to take risks and learn from mistakes. By celebrating progress, offering encouragement, and highlighting strengths, I help students see themselves as capable learners. This focus on confidence-building often leads to greater resilience, independence, and motivation in their studies.
My specialist experience providing engaging sessions to inspire a love of learning
I am passionate about designing sessions that are engaging, creative, and interactive. I incorporate real-world connections, varied resources, and activities tailored to individual interests, ensuring that learning remains enjoyable and meaningful. For students with learning difficulties, I use multisensory techniques, short and focused tasks, and regular opportunities for success to keep them motivated. My work as an English Education Specialist has also reinforced my expertise in developing innovative and inclusive teaching methods, both for students and for the teachers I train. Whether online or face-to-face, my sessions are dynamic and designed to help students develop not only knowledge and skills but also a genuine enjoyment of learning.
My skills and experience supporting young people to develop their independence
Helping students to become more independent learners is a key focus of my approach. I provide support with executive functioning skills such as planning, organisation, and time management, which are especially important for students with working memory difficulties. I teach practical strategies for breaking down revision, retaining information, and approaching tasks step by step. Over time, students gain the tools and confidence to take ownership of their learning, becoming more resilient, organised, and self-sufficient both in school and beyond.
In summary
My dedication to teaching and my extensive experience with SEN pupils underscore my commitment to providing high-quality education. I strive to create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment where every student can achieve their full potential.

Something Sensational About Me
At 19 years of age, my first experience in the classroom was in a Primary School in Tanzania. I taught a energetic class of 5 and 6 year olds as part of my gap year. I absolutely loved it!
