About Me

I seek to empower young people to reach their full potential – academically, socially and emotionally through my commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging. As a highly experienced teacher I have spent over 25 years working with young people with a range of learning and special educational needs. I have established and led 2 alternative provisions and have worked in multi-agency settings. I am ambitious for my students and through the creation of a safe learning environment I seek to support them to re-discover a confidence and excitement in learning.

My approach is creative, nurturing and neuroaffirming based on an understanding of pedagogy and neurodevelopment.

Skills & Experience​

I am an experienced teacher and education leader – over the course of my career I have worked in mainstream secondary schools, in schools overseas where students learn in a second language, in school for children with MLD and SEMH and in alternative provisions.

As head of education in a secure children’s home working with vulnerable, looked after children I cemented my commitment to ensuring that all young people that I work with have the best opportunity to become confident and successful learners through a personalised and flexible approach.

Within SEN environments I have developed a deep knowledge and understanding of a range of needs including:

  • Speech Language & Communication Needs
  • SEMH (social, emotional and mental health needs)
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Neurodivergent profiles: ADHD, ASC, Dyslexia, PDA, Dyscalculia
  • MLD (moderate learning difficulties)

With a PGCE in secondary science I use practical and play based approaches to learning whenever possible. I seek to support learners to embrace the awe and wonder that comes from exploring how the world works and being part of the natural world. STEM activities are a great opportunity to develop a range of thinking and learning skills.

I am a Trauma-Informed practitioner and lead Mental Health teacher – I believe creating a safe learning environment is the priority for students to achieve their best. In multi-agency settings I have worked closely with CAMHs to support young people through 1:1 mentoring and small group work.

Through application of pedagogy (method and theory of teaching) and an understanding of cognitive load and development I structure learning through small steps, modelling and student practice to help learners grow in their understanding and mastery of their areas of study.

I draw on deep expertise in supporting diverse needs, including SLCN, SEMH, sensory differences, MLD and neurodivergent profiles such as ADHD, ASC, Dyslexia, PDA and Dyscalculia. Whether working one-to-one, in small groups or in multi-agency teams, I prioritise relationships, safety and wellbeing so that every learner can thrive, grow in mastery and reach their full potential.

Something Sensational About Me

I love being outside in nature, spotting birds, flowers and walking my elderly dog.

At home I enjoy making all sorts of sourdough creations, sweet and savoury. Focaccia is a firm family favourite!

    I just wanted to say how grateful we are for the support we received. My child has additional needs and can find learning and confidence really difficult, especially in bigger environments. Philippa had such a gentle, understanding way with him and really took the time to get to know his interests and needs. She would bring little tailored things that suited him, which meant so much and helped him feel safe and engaged.

    She truly “got” him in a way that many people don’t, and that gave him a level of comfort and confidence I hadn’t seen in a long time. He genuinely looked forward to his sessions and felt very comfortable doing his extra learning with her after school.

    I also want to say how kind and accommodating the team were, especially Helen, who made me feel really comfortable and supported as a parent. As a mum of a neurodivergent child, feeling understood and validated means everything.

    Thank you for the care, patience and understanding you showed our family. It made a real difference.
