With 30 years varied educational experience behind me, I am pleased to offer a wide range of SEN teaching, leadership and management skills. Fully qualified with a secondary PGCE, I have taught in independent, mainstream primary and special schools.

I have experience in MLD, SLD, PMLD, SEMH and ASC environments. I have considerable experience of teaching in and leading sixth form/Post 16 SEN settings. I have a good working knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice, Education Health and Care Plans, the Local Offer and meeting the complex needs of learners with profound disabilities. I champion the pursuit of holistic outcomes ensuring that clinical and therapeutic needs are met as well as curricular and vocational. Maximising sustainable independence and enabling learners to make a tangible contribution to society remain my priorities and moral purpose.

I began working in SEN in 2003 and moved from an MLD setting to a generic-SLD provision in 2005. In 2008 I took up a Deputy Headship at Barrs Court Special School in Hereford. Under the inspirational leadership of Richard Aird OBE I developed further knowledge and skills working with PMLD learners aged 7 – 19 years. I am experienced in working with both high attaining autistic and very low functioning complex learners. I create individualised learning journeys using a context and stimulus that interests and motivates learners.

I am a versatile, creative and reflective practitioner who always puts learners at the heart of all decisions. I use a wide range of leadership and teaching styles according to context and place value in nurturing positive relationships at all levels. I am experienced in communicating effectively with a wide range of multi-agency stakeholders. I am able to adapt to new environments and identify priority needs. I have experience if rapid action planning and driving successful school improvement. More recently I have focussed on offering educational consultancy and bespoke one to-one tuition packages to pupils with special educational needs.

Task analysis and breaking down the concepts of learning; (Classwork/Homework); I employ structured approaches to learning through the principles of Assessment for Learning. I will provide learners with a clear concept of over-arching learning objectives. This will begin with context and emersion, leading to  chronological and tangible steps to success (success criteria). Marking and feedback is directly linked to this criteria and self assessment is proactively encouraged. Expertise in the cross curricular delivery of Literacy skills through History and Geography. Particularly with ASC students, I will personalise curriculum to ensure interest and motivation is maximised.

I specialise in developing self confidence and social interactivity skills; I adopt a sensitive and well-humoured teaching style, conscious of pragmatic semantic barriers.

Motivation and engagement of learners; I actively encourage learners to share their successes and anxieties through appropriate communication and conversation. I will support the implementation of functionally-equivalent skills through a range of strategies including 'zones of regulation'.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe learning opportunities should be accessible and available to all members of society. Inclusive learning is key and achieved through bespoke and personalised curriculum and teaching strategies. Learning should be enjoyable, purposeful and a pathway to leading a full and rewarding life.

Something Sensational About Me

As well as enjoying my time tutoring, I also work as a professional actor and close-up magician. My sessions will always be creative, positive and engaging.
