SENsational Tutors Ltd are looking for a highly experienced teacher with QTS to deliver engaging and highly personalised 1:1 tutoring sessions for a non-speaking autistic student, aged 5, in North London.

The successful tutor will have significant experience supporting non-speaking autistic children and will understand how to adapt teaching and communication to meet the student's individual needs. Experience using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and other communication approaches would be highly desirable.

Full details will be discussed during interview; however, an overview of the role is below:

  • Up to 15 hours per week, daytime Monday to Friday.
  • Hourly rate: usually from £63 per hour to £70 per hour* (i.e. up to £945 to £1,050 per week).
    *Tutors are self-employed and able to set their own hourly rates.

You will need to:

  • Deliver tailored teaching activities to the student on a one-to-one basis;
  • Plan and prepare engaging lessons in accordance with the student's unique learning, communication and sensory needs;
  • Adapt teaching methods to ensure learning is accessible to a non-speaking student;
  • Use the student's preferred methods of communication and, where appropriate, confidently incorporate AAC and visual communication strategies into sessions;
  • Recognise and respond to the student's communication attempts, interests and individual ways of expressing choices and needs;
  • Assess and monitor the student's progress and provide feedback to parents and other professionals/individuals;
  • Help the student engage positively in learning at a pace appropriate to them;
  • Support the student's confidence, independence, social and emotional development;
  • Work collaboratively with parents and any professionals involved in the student's education and support;
  • Supervise student safety;
  • Any other tasks requested by your client/s.

Skills and requirements:

You will need:

  • QTS;
  • A proven record of being able to heighten pupils' confidence, trust, self-esteem and love of learning;
  • At least 5 years' experience teaching and assessing children with SEN/SEND, particularly autistic children, in schools or specialist settings;
  • Strong experience working directly with non-speaking or minimally speaking autistic children;
  • A strong understanding of communication differences and the ability to recognise communication beyond spoken language;
  • Experience with AAC, visual supports and alternative communication approaches is highly desirable;
  • An excellent understanding of autism, sensory differences and individualised approaches to learning;
  • The ability to develop engaging learning activities around a student's interests, strengths and preferred ways of communicating;
  • 100% passion for education, commitment, reliability and honesty;
  • To creatively apply differentiated techniques to planning and teaching;
  • Excellent communication, literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Incredible patience, empathy and adaptability;
  • An excellent knowledge of different learning styles and how to use these;
  • The ability to understand and respond appropriately to behaviour that may communicate an unmet need, difficulty or distress;
  • The ability to work flexibly and attend meetings outside hours if necessary;
  • To be a team-worker and collaborate effectively with parents and other professionals;
  • A valid enhanced DBS check on the update service;
  • A willingness to apply for public liability and professional indemnity insurance;
  • Register to work as self-employed.
