SENsational Tutors Ltd are looking for a highly experienced teacher with QTS to deliver engaging and highly personalised 1:1 tutoring sessions for an autistic young person, aged 17, with PDA, SEMH needs and experience of trauma in Rochdale.

The successful tutor will have significant experience supporting autistic young people with PDA, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and trauma. They will be confident using a patient, flexible, trauma-informed and relationship-led approach to rebuild trust, confidence and engagement with learning.

Full details will be discussed during interview; however, an overview of the role is below:

  • 10–15 hours per week, daytime Monday to Friday.
  • Hourly rate: usually from £63 per hour to £70 per hour* (i.e. £630 to £1,050 per week, depending on hours).
    *Tutors are self-employed and able to set their own hourly rates.

You will need to:

  • Deliver tailored teaching activities to the young person on a one-to-one basis;
  • Plan and prepare engaging lessons around their individual strengths, interests and needs;
  • Use trauma-informed, PDA-informed and low-demand approaches to support engagement;
  • Prioritise relationship-building, emotional safety and trust;
  • Adapt teaching to meet the young person’s autistic, sensory, emotional and communication needs;
  • Support them to gradually develop confidence, independence and a positive relationship with learning;
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to anxiety, distress and dysregulation;
  • Assess and monitor learning and provide feedback to parents/carers and other professionals/individuals;
  • Support social and emotional development;
  • Work collaboratively with parents/carers and professionals involved in the young person’s education and support;
  • Supervise student safety;
  • Any other tasks requested by your client/s.

Skills and requirements:

You will need:

  • QTS;
  • A proven record of being able to heighten students’ confidence, trust, self-esteem and love of learning;
  • At least 5 years’ experience teaching and assessing children and young people with SEN/SEND;
  • Significant experience supporting autistic young people with PDA and SEMH needs;
  • At least 2 years’ experience supporting children or young people who have experienced trauma;
  • A strong understanding of trauma-informed and PDA-informed approaches to education;
  • Experience supporting young people who may experience significant anxiety or difficulty engaging with formal education;
  • The ability to use flexible, creative and low-demand approaches to support engagement;
  • 100% passion for education, commitment, reliability and honesty;
  • To creatively apply differentiated techniques to planning and teaching;
  • Excellent communication, literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Incredible patience, empathy and adaptability;
  • An excellent knowledge of different learning styles and how to use these;
  • The ability to respond calmly and appropriately to behaviour that may communicate anxiety, distress or an unmet need;
  • The ability to work flexibly and attend meetings outside hours if necessary;
  • To be a team-worker and collaborate effectively with families and other professionals;
  • A valid enhanced DBS check on the update service;
  • A willingness to apply for public liability and professional indemnity insurance;
  • Register to work as self-employed.
