I have over twenty years of experience working alongside children and young people with a wide range of Special Educational Needs (SEN), emotional needs and behavioural difficulties. I began my career as a youth worker, supporting children with a variety of emotional, social and additional needs. A key part of my role was ensuring that every child felt safe, valued and supported while helping them to enjoy a positive quality of life. This early experience taught me the importance of patience, consistency and building trusting relationships with young people. It also developed my passion for supporting children who may require additional guidance to achieve their potential.

My experience as a youth worker encouraged me to pursue a career within education, and I progressed to working at a college supporting students with SEN. During this role, I worked closely with young people with a range of needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down's syndrome, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and cerebral palsy. I supported students throughout their college day, helping them to work towards individual educational, social and independence targets. I remained in this position for three years and particularly enjoyed developing positive relationships with the students, their families and the wider staff team. This experience strengthened my understanding that every learner is different and that successful education requires flexibility and an individualised approach.

I later progressed into a teaching role within a specialist primary school, where I was responsible for planning and delivering lessons for children with a variety of complex needs. An important part of my role was ensuring that the outcomes and targets identified within each child's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) were incorporated meaningfully into their learning. I developed personalised learning opportunities based on each child's ability, interests, communication needs and individual targets rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. The position was demanding but extremely rewarding and required me to work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including social workers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, school nurses and other education professionals. Working collaboratively ensured that the children's educational, emotional, physical and communication needs were considered as part of their overall development.

To further develop my career, I moved into teaching children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This was a challenging environment, but one in which I developed considerably as a teacher and enjoyed the opportunity to make a positive difference. Many of the children I supported had experienced significant difficulties in their lives, including children in care and those who had experienced neglect or challenging home circumstances. My priority was to create a safe, predictable and supportive classroom environment where pupils could develop trusting relationships and successfully access education. I regularly communicated with parents, family members, carers and other professionals to discuss progress, behaviour and strategies that could support each child. This experience strengthened my ability to adapt lessons, respond calmly to challenging situations and understand that positive relationships are often the foundation for successful learning.

For the past few years, I have worked as a one-to-one tutor supporting children and young adults with SEN and SEMH needs. I find this work particularly rewarding because it allows me to focus closely on the individual learner and develop a personalised approach based on their strengths, interests, needs and educational targets. I place great importance on developing positive relationships and creating an environment where students feel comfortable, respected and confident enough to engage with learning. I regularly adapt traditional teaching methods and use practical, creative and interest-based activities to motivate students who may have previously struggled to engage with education. Throughout my career, my aim has remained consistent: to help every student recognise their strengths, develop their confidence and self-worth, and make meaningful progress both academically and personally.

My approach to teaching is practical, engaging and centred around the individual student rather than relying solely on formal methods of teaching. I believe that one of the most important parts of successful tutoring is developing a positive and trusting relationship with the student first. Once I understand their personality, interests, strengths and areas for development, I can create a personalised curriculum that is meaningful and engaging for them. Wherever possible, I incorporate a student's interests into lessons and use practical, hands-on activities to make learning enjoyable and accessible.

I use a range of strategies and interventions depending on the individual needs of the student. These can include practical activities, educational games, visual resources, technology, movement breaks, positive reinforcement and breaking larger tasks into smaller, achievable steps. I also use regular changes of activity to maintain engagement, particularly when supporting students who may find it difficult to concentrate for extended periods. I understand that every student learns differently, so I am always prepared to adapt my teaching approach.

Flexibility is particularly important within my tutoring. If I recognise that a student is becoming disengaged, frustrated or overwhelmed by an activity, I do not believe in simply continuing with the task because it was part of the original lesson plan. I always have alternative activities and resources available so that I can respond to the student's needs while still working towards their learning objectives. This allows me to maintain engagement and create positive learning experiences rather than allowing education to become a source of frustration.

I also place a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement. I recognise and celebrate a student's effort, progress and achievements, including the smaller successes that can sometimes be overlooked. For students who may have previously had negative experiences of education, developing confidence and self-belief can be just as important as academic progress. I want students to feel proud of what they have achieved and gradually become more confident and independent learners.

For me, a good tutor is patient, adaptable, encouraging and able to build a genuine professional relationship with their students. A student should feel safe, respected and valued during every session and know that their tutor believes in their ability to succeed. By combining positive relationships with personalised, practical and engaging learning opportunities, I aim to create an environment where students want to participate, develop confidence and make meaningful progress.
