25 Years in the Classroom
My teaching career spans a quarter of a century, giving me a breadth of experience across the full range of English teaching; from mainstream classrooms to, more recently, six years working exclusively with autistic young people in a specialist secondary setting. This range means I've seen what works, what doesn't, and how to adapt my approach to whatever a student needs, rather than relying on a single teaching style.

SEND & Autism Specialism
My most recent six years were spent entirely within a specialist setting for autistic students, where I developed a genuinely tailored approach to teaching English, one built on structure, predictability, and patience rather than pace or pressure. One student I worked with had selective mutism and had never spoken in a classroom setting throughout their school life; through a slow, trust-led approach over an extended period, they went on to achieve a GCSE in English Literature, entirely through written work and adapted assessment routes.

GCSE English Language & Literature
I teach the full GCSE English curriculum, covering both Language and Literature, with a strong focus on exam technique, close reading, and confident essay writing. I understand the specification requirements in depth and know how to break down complex texts and analytical skills into manageable steps for students who find the subject overwhelming or inaccessible in a traditional classroom setting.

Functional Skills English
For students where GCSE isn't the right fit, or as a stepping stone alongside it, I also teach Functional Skills English at Level 1 and Level 2. This includes Speaking & Listening, Reading, and Writing components. One student arrived at our first session virtually mute, unable to engage verbally in any capacity; through a gradual, low-pressure approach over many months, they went on to achieve a pass in Speaking & Listening at Level 2, a genuinely significant milestone for them and their family.

SEMH & PDA Support
I have extensive experience supporting students with SEMH needs and PDA, including those experiencing emotionally-based school avoidance (EBSA). My approach is collaborative and low-demand wherever possible, offering choices, avoiding direct instruction where it isn't necessary, and building sessions around what a student can manage that day rather than a fixed agenda.

Building Confidence & Engagement
For many of the students I work with, the biggest barrier to progress in English is confidence, anxiety, or a history of negative experiences with the subject. I focus first on rebuilding that relationship, creating a calm and predictable space where a student can engage without fear of judgement, before gradually increasing academic challenge as their confidence grows.

Exam Preparation & Progress Tracking
Where a student is working toward GCSE or Functional Skills exams, I provide clear, structured exam preparation - including past paper practice, timed writing, and targeted feedback on areas for development. I keep parents informed of progress throughout, so everyone has a clear picture of where a student stands and what's being worked on next.

My approach to teaching is built on one core belief: a student has to feel safe before they can learn. That's true for every student, but it's especially true for the SEND students I specialise in, many of whom arrive carrying years of negative experience with English as a subject. So before I focus on grades or progress, I focus on trust, showing a student that this is a space without judgement, without pressure, and without the fear of getting it wrong.

In practice, that means sessions built around structure and predictability. Students know what to expect from me and how a session will unfold, which reduces anxiety and frees up the mental space needed to actually engage with the work. I use a low-demand, collaborative approach wherever possible - offering choices rather than instructions, breaking tasks into small and manageable steps, and reading the room closely enough to adapt pace on the day, rather than pushing through a fixed plan regardless of how a student is doing.

Patience is central to how I work. Progress with SEND students is rarely linear, and real change often comes slowly, through consistency over weeks and months rather than a single breakthrough session. I've learned not to mistake a quiet or slow session for a lack of progress, sometimes the biggest steps are the quietest ones.

I believe a good tutor is one who adapts to the student in front of them, rather than delivering the same approach regardless of who they're working with. That means genuinely listening to what a student says, and often more importantly, to what they don't say. It means being willing to slow down, change direction, or abandon a plan entirely if it isn't working for that student on that day. And it means celebrating small wins as genuinely as large ones, because for many of the students I work with, small wins are exactly where lasting confidence begins.

I'm also honest, with both students and parents, about what tutoring can and can't do. I won't promise a specific grade or a fixed timeframe for progress, because every student's starting point and journey is different, and over-promising helps no one in the long run. With students, that means being straightforward about where they're at and what still needs work, without ever making that feel like criticism, honesty delivered with care, not blame. With parents, I offer an honest, ongoing picture of progress, realistic expectations about pace, and a commitment to flagging early if something isn't working so we can adjust together, rather than letting things coast simply because it's easier to say all is well.
