Specialist Experience and Skills

I am experienced in working with children with autism, including with severe behaviour difficulties and additional learning difficulties. I have worked with verbal and non verbal children and am trained in PECs.

Currently I work in a school for children and young people with ASD and additional learning difficulties. Currently I work in a school for children and young people with ASD and additional learning difficulties. I teach a KS3 class, where all the young people are non-verbal and so we use alternative methods of communication such as PECS and signing. I can adapt my teaching for each highly individual student and make sure that they have the resources they need to access the learning. I see it as my role to provide them with the toolset be able to learn, and that they learn what they need in order to live a more independent life.

I have learned that teaching and learning should be fun, and am able to bring a little bit of wonder and magic into my classroom, giving students that 'WOW' moment that will help them engage and learn.

Previous to teaching in an SEN school, I was lead nursery teacher at a mainstream school. Working with 60 3 and 4 year olds gave me skills in differentiating and understanding the importance of helping these children build their confidence. The confidence in their own skills helped them grow and develop and transition into reception and year 1 ready to learn and with a love of school.

Previous to teaching, I was a practicing doctor, working in hospital. This has given me an ability to understand wildly different people from all kinds of backgrounds, and to remain calm in the face of stressful situations. During my paediatric placements I worked with children with multiple difficulties and complex disability, and in the early diagnosis and support of these children and their families.

I have tutored children from mainstream schools who have needed a little extra support, both to access the curriculum and also to support them with 7+ and 11+ entrance exams. I have knowledge about the 11+ exams for multiple schools.

My Teaching Philosophy

Empathetic, relentlessly patient, encouraging, enthusiastic, encouraging autonomy and independence with a helping hand.
I believe it is vital for children and young people to build their own confidence and self esteem; I scaffold their learning without being overbearing, to give them that boost that they can do it!
Every child is capable of doing something wonderful, and I like to explore what makes a child tick, what really engages that child and then to use that to help them with their learning.
Children learn when they feel secure and as such I am open and sympathetic, building up a strong rapport with the child, making sure that they love learning.

Something Sensational About Me

I love baking and I’ve always got a stash of brownies with me!
