I have taught students with a range of Special Educational Needs (including autism, ADHD, FASD, Learning Difficulties, Speech and Language difficulties, anxiety, specific learning difficulties, difficulties with working memory and attention, and SEMH needs) for the past 12 years and am extremely passionate about what I do. I am very creative and have experience in supporting students with complex needs over a range of settings.

My skills and experience supporting your child with ADHD to develop impulse control: I take a child centred approach to supporting students to develop confidence and impulse control. Through co-setting goals and building in opportunities for success students develop self- regulation strategies. I support them to develop breathing techniques, self and body awareness and support them to develop their relationships through creative activities. I have experience in using sensory diets and whole body learning to empower students to develop strategies in self-regulation.

My skills and experience teaching social skills, including conflict resolution skills: I ran a group for girls with Autism and ADHD and their sisters for two years and have extensive experience in supporting students with social skills and social communication difficulties. Through activities to develop relationships and build on self-awareness and expression I have supported students to navigate their diagnoses and navigating the social world and their own feeling and emotions. This included developing skills in conflict resolution through using drama and art to develop strategies for dealing with situations in the classroom or at home and in managing relationship dynamics in the group.

My experience in working with children with Learning Difficulties including FASD: The fundamental building blocks of learning are engagement, developing attention and listening skills, communication, shared attention, developing confidence and a growth mindset and building relationships. These are all skills which can both be taught discretely and intrinsically through curriculum based learning. I believe in taking a holistic and nurturing approach to ensure that children not only develop academic skills but also the wider understanding which enables them to become happy and independent adults. Developing wellbeing and supporting students emotional regulation through strategies such as the Zones of Regulation supports them to be ‘ready to learn’. Incorporating multisensory approaches enables students to receive the sensory input that is suitable for them as part of their learning. This supports self-regulation and the holistic development of skills. I take a creative approach to the teaching of read. I am passionate about developing a genuine ‘want’ to read through creating stories that are based around students individual interests and are supported by visuals and opportunities to build on success. In the teaching of Maths I take a multisensory approach with blends concrete experiences and clear visuals. This promotes consolidation and actualisation and through using motivating and fun activities learning becomes embedded. If you would like support with helping your child to develop skills in; Attention and Listening, Speech and Language, Literacy, Maths, self-regulation, confidence, working memory or support with their behaviour or if they are finding it challenging to engage with their learning, please get in touch.

How I can help your child if they have low working memory: I have worked extensively with experienced Educational Psychologists to develop programmes of support for students with working memory difficulties as both a SENCO, teacher and leader of a specialist provision. This difficulty alongside DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) have often, in my experience, been the most common areas of difficulty for students in schools that is not always identified. Through the use of visual supports, games and frequent consolidation of learning I have supported many students to develop core skills and develop confidence in using strategies to support themselves.

How can I help your child with challenging behaviour?: All behaviour is a form of communication and it is important to unpick what different behaviours are trying to 'tell' us; is the issue a sensory one? Is it because we need to adapt the activity that we are presenting to make it more manageable? Or is it because the reaction that we are giving is one that is desired? Or is it something else entirely? Through working with families and children I am able to support in developing an understanding of both why these behaviours are happening and what we can do to target them. This includes developing social skills and strategies for conflict resolution through social stories, play, drama and art.

My experience and skills working with children in the early years: I have taught children with SEN from the Foundation Stage to KS4 in both mainstream and specialist settings. I have a passion for early intervention and much of my career to date has focused on early language, social skills and motor skill development. I have a deep understanding of the Early Years curriculum and have tailored and adapted it to meet the needs of many children with SEN In mainstream contexts as well as having experience in developing and creating curriculums in specialist settings. This includes training early years staff in how to meet the individual needs of children with various complex needs such as Autism, Global Delay, ADHD and processing and communication difficulties. I plan child centred activities to ensure that children are both happy and motivated to learn. I take a play based approach and this enables children to develop attention, play and social skills in a fun and engaging way. Through a combination of evidence based interventions and child centred activities children are able to master skills in Developing their working memory, sequencing, comprehension and social understanding alongside developing their fine motor skills and speech.

My experience in working collaboratively with a range of professionals: I am a qualified SENCO and I am a senior leader in a specialist school. I have worked with children both in my specialist provision and across the mainstream school to overcome their barriers to learning and have supported and trained other teachers to do the same. I work collaboratively with a wide range of professionals who I have both learnt from and have supported to ensure that the children that I teach have the best possible opportunities. This breadth of experience has enabled me to take a broader view of the education of children with SEN and the challenges that the children themselves face, alongside the challenges faced by parents and teachers at each developmental phase. I have worked extensively with professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, OTs, Physiotherapists and Educational Psychologist to collaboratively design and deliver programmes of support. Through this multi-agency working I have been able to enrich and develop my own practice and develop a broader view of how to meet children’s needs. I regularly deliver support and training to professionals and parents in a range of strategies to support the learning and development of children with SEN. I have worked extensively with families to support with all areas of development including strategies to develop language, friendship and social skills strategies, behaviour challenges, sleep issues, eating difficulties and toileting.

My experience in working with students with Autism (including high-functioning), Sensory processing and communication and interaction difficulties: I have worked with students with Autism, Communication and Language difficulties and sensory processing disorders across a variety of settings for over 14 years. I have worked extensively with speech and language therapist and OTs to support students holistically. I firmly believe that engagement is the first step in all learning and I work creatively and flexibly to personalise learning for each of my students to ensure that they are motivated and happy. Through using a mixture of evidence based strategies such as Attention Autism, PECS, TEACCH, Visuals Supports, Colourful Semantics and Language for Thinking and taking a multisensory sensory, bespoke approach I have been able to support students to grow and learn to their full potential.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe strongly in having a bespoke approach for each child. Through understanding each child as an individual and building on their strengths we can work together to help them overcome their barriers to learning.

I passionately believe that all children have the potential to succeed whatever their starting points. Creativity and adaptability are the cornerstones of teaching and one size does not fit all, children need a bespoke approach. My breadth of experience enables me to take a realistic and informed approach to meeting individual children's needs through the use of both evidence based interventions and specialised programmes of support. Through developing an understanding of each child that I work with, I am able to tailor their learning to both engage them, have fun and enable them to make progress while celebrating the small steps to success along the way.

      Clare

Suzanna is a fabulous SEN tutor. She has been working with our son for 6 months now and is helping him gain confidence in his capabilities and is helping him on the journey to learn to read. We are very pleased to have her in our lives. She is enthusiastic and fun but also knows how to enable learning too. She has been great at thinking outside the box and helping with his language and verbal communication skills.
