A fully-qualified and experienced Speech and Language therapist with 7+ years' experience. Since graduating with my undergraduate degree in Speech and Language Therapy, I have worked in the NHS and private sector and provided therapy within educational settings across London. More recently I completed an Advanced Practice Masters course in Speech, Language and Communication Needs at City University of London. I have experience of working in a variety of settings; these have included mainstream primary and secondary schools as well as special schools for children and young people with MLD/ PMLD and Alternative Resource Provisions for children with Autism. I have experience of working with children from diverse cultural backgrounds, including those that have English as their additional language.
Experience working with children and young adults with autism and speech and language delay/ disorder: I have had experience of working with individuals with language and/or speech impairment, Autism (ASD) and severe learning difficulties. In addition to this I have had the opportunity to work in a unit for excluded teenagers and support a special needs outreach team serving children in mainstream schools that have more complex difficulties. In a previous role I at a special school my caseload consisted of working with children and adolescents with Autism, severe learning difficulties and sensory needs.
Experience boosting confidence and self-esteem: I have worked with a number of individuals who have autism and those with Learning difficulties and successfully used therapeutic skills to build communication skills and confidence. Building the student's confidence is important and this starts with building a good rapport with the child and getting to know their likes and dislikes. This allows me to understand what motivates the child and include this where possible into interventions and also support their ability to engage in learning.
Experience developing social skills and social interaction: For interventions, I have used: comic strips, social stories, social skills groups, communication passports, arts and crafts, use of video analysis, vocabulary training, colourful semantics, shape coding, Lego therapy, language for thinking, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, SCERTS, life skills, music and role play.
Use of specialist strategies and interventions: In addition to the above, I have also made assessments and therapy resources such as social stories, now/next boards, visual timelines and stories with symbols using Microsoft programmes and specialist software such as Clicker 7, Symwriter and Widgit.
Experience compiling speech and language therapy assessments and reports: I have established knowledge of a range of standardised and functional assessments. Some of these include; SCERTS assessment, The Derbyshire Language Scheme, the Renfrew Action Picture Test, Children’s Communication Checklist, Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals 4 (CELF), The Pre- School CELF and South Tyneside Assessment of Phonology. Using these results I am able to provide reports upon request. I can also provide more comprehensive reports for the purpose of Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) requests.
Experience collaborating with other professionals: Indirect work has included liaising with other professionals, delivering training and working with parents through coffee mornings and afternoon drop-in clinics. As well as this I have been able to work with other professionals and external agencies, this has included Family Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Teachers, Social Workers. I tailor therapy activities to the individual individual’s needs whether this be group, individual or indirectly through teachers and teaching assistants. This also includes planning and delivering training to a range of audiences, including; teachers, trainee teachers and Learning Support Staff.
Further information: I have experience of attending safeguarding conferences for individuals on my caseload and providing assessment and reports and reviews for children with Child Protection Plans.
