I am highly skilled and successful at delivering bespoke sessions that combine both my teaching and therapy abilities to enable each individual to achieve their full potential academically and socially. I believe that communication and learning are inherently entwined, and aim to help a child progress from learning to communicate to communicating to learn. I qualified as a teacher in 2013 and began my career working in an orphanage for individuals with disabilities in Thailand, delivering fun and engaging sessions to help the children learn and develop key skills. I also introduced a PECS system to help the children to become more independent, make choices about their lives, and communicate their needs.

When I returned to the U.K., I worked as a secondary school teacher. I was highly successful in this role, and was promoted to Head of Department after just one year, delivering unprecedented improvements in student performance, and receiving high praise from managers and students alike for my engaging lessons, and positive, supportive approach to learning. I also endeavoured to help students develop extra-curricular skills, including creating a Volunteering Society to give students the opportunity to make a difference to their community.

Despite enjoying teaching mainstream, I realised my true motivation was helping students with SEN, so following a period of working abroad, teaching English as an Additional Language to adults and children, I decided to undertake a Masters in Speech and Language Therapy, focusing in particular on working with children with speech, language and communication needs, including autism spectrum conditions (ASC), language disorders and developmental delay. Since graduating with Distinction I have undertaken work as a specialist tutor alongside working full-time as an SLT delivering group and individualised lessons in an independent special needs provision.

I am therefore uniquely skilled in that I am both highly experienced and qualified as a teacher, whilst also able to deliver professional Speech and Language Therapy. I believe that there are many parallels between students’ educational and therapeutic learning, and that communication and language skills can also be taught. I am able to deliver cohesive sessions where such skills are embedded in curriculum-based learning, and students have the opportunity to keep practising and receiving feedback, which is key to mastering a skill. I am also able to implement specialist SLT interventions, including Shape Coding, Attention Autism and the Nuffield Programme, with which I have seen fantastic results.

Experience teaching social skills and building self-esteem:

In my current role I give daily sessions supporting children in the development of their social skills. This includes skills needed for daily interactions, such as using someone's name to gain their attention before speaking to them; skills needed to have fun with others, such as turn taking and acceptance of losing a game; and conversation skills, such as asking questions and showing interest. I believe that these skills can be taught as with academic learning, and are crucial in developing a child's confidence in the classroom environment. Positive interactions with peers are crucial in building self-esteem. In line with this, I use structured, evidence-based programmes in teaching a social curriculum, in particular 'Social Thinking' resources, which can easily be shared with parents to increase generalisation and enhance outcomes.

Experience supporting Maths, English, and general study skills:

I am trained as a primary teacher, and have been widely praised for my innovative approach to engage children in learning subjects which they perceive as difficult. When teaching maths, for instance, I take a holistic approach using multi-sensory resources to make learning exciting, and design activities which will enable students to use other cognitive pathways, in particular memory pathways, to demonstrate their learning and succeed. When teaching English, I employ pedagogical techniques developed through my experience teaching English as a foreign language to help my student break down linguistic structures in ways which make sense to them. I believe this is key to helping them understand and process language.

Most important to my work is fostering independence among students and their parents or carers to be able to generalise what they have learned beyond the session and feel empowered to do so. My goal is for my students to develop the long-lasting study skills they need to succeed at life.

Experience with autism/ ASC: I am particularly skilled at working with individuals with ASC, having an extended review of theories of autism acclaimed by my University at undergraduate level, which was previously unprecedented. Since then I have worked with children with a range of ASC-related needs both in the community and in school, and have extensive experience in tailoring sessions to suit these needs and individual interests to maximise learning. Since qualifying as a Master of Speech and Language Therapy, I have spent the last two years delivering individual and small group sessions to children with ASC and comorbid conditions, targeting the development of communication skills alongside academic learning. I combine evidence-based approaches such as 'Attention Autism' and 'TEACHH' with my unique combination of skills to tailor sessions to the specific individual, which has led to consistently impressive outcomes.

Experience with behavioural needs, PDA and related conditions: In my current role I am working with several children with PDA and behavioural needs, and am receiving ongoing training in strategies to support these individuals and enable them to continue to access education. This means I am up to date with research and practical, effective techniques which I employ as a tutor to help get the most out of my students. I believe the best learning occurs when children are having so much fun that they want to keep going, and so try to include engaging and personally-motivating activities in all my sessions, particularly for children with PDA.

My extensive experience in different settings also means I have developed excellent interpersonal and communication skills. I know the importance of sharing information and working as a team to help achieve the best outcomes for children. I have handled many challenging situations and have a can-do attitude to finding solutions which work for everyone. My leadership experience and my previous roles tutoring have also allowed me to develop impeccable organisational skills; I can be relied on to respond and complete tasks in a timely manner, to make the tutoring process simple and enjoyable.

My Teaching Philosophy

I take a holistic approach to teaching and therapy, and believe that individuals learn best when they are happy, feeling good about themselves and having fun. I am down-to-earth but goal-focused, and endeavour to maximally empathise with students, considering their interests and motivations. I believe that this helps facilitate both positive behaviour and progress towards targets, in that a student is engaged and enjoying the session as well as developing and learning. I also believe that communication skills should be embedded within general learning, to enable them to be applied in real scenarios and developed more effectively.
