I am well-qualified and have a demonstrable, on-going interest in educational values, aims and methods. Since qualifying as a teacher in 2003, I have continued my studies in education (including educational research methods and philosophy) at MA, MSc and PhD. Since qualifying as a teacher, I have also taught in a range of educational settings in the UK and internationally. These include secondary schools, specialist schools and centres, sixth form colleges, language schools and UK universities.
In addition to my classroom teaching experience, I have acted as a personal tutor for various students, including SEN students, from ages 8-adult, both on a self-employed basis and for the National Teaching and Advisory Service, where I also taught English and Mathematics. I have also been an examiner (and team-leader) for Cambridge Assessment since 2004 at both GCSE and A-level and am also an examiner, moderator, and curriculum developer for the IB Diploma (Philosophy). In both my tutoring and examining roles, I have gained up-to-date insights into the demands of a range of examination specifications which aided me in improving outcomes for my own students.
My experience teaching students with dyslexia: I have had extensive experience of teaching young people with Dyslexia. This began when I home schooled my eldest daughter who was diagnosed with Dyslexia in 2010. I have since acted as private tutor for various students with Dyslexia as well as worked as a specialist tutor through the National Teaching and Advisory Service and, more recently, through SENse Learning in Sussex. I have also completed various INSET and other training courses in Dyslexia since studying for my MSc in Education in 2010. One thing that I am well-aware of is how a one-size-fits-all approach is insufficient to help students with Dyslexia, as one person's learning need and style of learning is often quite different from the next. As such, being well-versed in the range of possible methods used to help dyslexic students is just the starting point: it is most definitely also a case of making the effort to discover what approaches work best for the individual student concerned.
