I design programs that are accessible for verbal or non-verbal children, children with language delay, complex needs, AAC users, high tech eye gaze or low tech communication system users. I can program AAC software such as Proloquo2go, Boardmaker, Widgit and Clicker.

My sessions always start with the learner and his/her strengths in order to build confidence and self-esteem. I discuss goals with the learner and parents, assess to check for any missing gaps and then carefully plan and design activities that build upon knowledge.

I employ a range of teaching strategies including multi-sensory learning and practical based sessions that are fun and engaging. This allows children to really understand what they are learning and why, and the relationships between new facts and previous learning.

I establish routines and use materials such as visual timetables, visual timers and organisational charts that help students know what to expect in every session and what is required of them. Skills are broken down into small steps and taught in a sequential manner and I use short, clear and concise instructions given one at a time.

I carefully monitor students’ arousal levels and change activities or provide a movement break when I notice a student’s attention is drifting. These changes restore safety and help students refocus so they are able to attend better to given activities.

I aim to inspire and develop confident and secure students, motivated to learn and excited by their education ahead. My extensive experience in teaching students with SEN means I am able to pinpoint where difficulties lie and the steps needed to address them. This ensures that each student makes the very best progress and grows in confidence, as well as ability.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that developing a good relationship with students is paramount to their success. Therefore I aim to create a happy, safe and nurturing environment where students feel valued and inspired to learn. I believe that warm, approachable, patient and understanding teachers give students the confidence to thrive.

My goal is to establish a strong foundation of skills, knowledge and confidence in a student to ensure that the building blocks for their future learning are secure. My programmes and sessions are carefully planned and organised so that pupils feel appropriately challenged yet supported.

I encourage children to generate their own information, organise that information, make sense of what they have collected, and communicate their understanding (for example by making a rule or telling me a pattern). This fosters independence, retention and is the most powerful way for children to learn things for themselves.

I review progress with children and parents and give advice on practical strategies in order to support learners in the home.

Something Sensational About Me

I have worked alongside some outstanding speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists and have learnt a great deal from them such as communication, speech and language development, fine and gross motor development, sensory diet activities, handwriting, organisational skill development and movement breaks to help with attention.

I am a very active person and utilise this in my sessions. I have studied aerial circus (but never performed) and now am attending pottery lessons.

Tasneem

My son aged 7 always looks forward to Kristy's tutoring sessions. He has been diagnosed with Dyscalculia and Kristy has definitely boosted my son's confidence in maths. The school have also noticed a remarkable improvement. Kristy provides a thorough report of what was covered in each session. I would definitely recommend Kristy as she is so passionate about helping children and making a difference.
