Specialist Experience and Skills

Prior to qualifying as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2009, I had worked in a special school for children with Autism where I initially developed a passion for working with children with ASD and their families. In my new role as an SLT I was happy to continue this work as well as building skills in supporting preschool and school-aged children with a range of speech and language delays/disorders.

Over my next two job roles within the Health and Education sectors I continued to develop a specialism in ASD by taking additional courses, and with growing experience this became my full time job. Over the years this has included a role on an NHS ASD diagnostic team, providing support and supervision to other Speech and Language Therapists, and extensive experience in supporting schools to plan and implement communication targets for children and young people.

I have experience supporting children and young people up to 16 years old who communicate in a range of different ways - verbally, through picture symbols, voice-output technology, through body language and gesture.
I am experienced in working in school and home settings, supporting the key people in your child's life to build their skills in facilitating communication. My work is heavily guided by the SCERTS framework which prioritises functional, spontaneous communication and supporting the development of emotional regulation skills through using the right supports to enable your child to communicate effectively with others.
I have extensive experience of developing and delivering training packages to school staff and parents across a range of topics relevant to ASD and communication, and have worked with other agencies to develop a Siblings Group for brothers and sisters of children and young people with an ASD diagnosis.

I am experienced and skilled in working collaboratively with parents and other key people in your child's life to set targets and embed strategies into your child's existing routine and activities that are interesting, meaningful and purposeful to them.

My Teaching Philosophy

My practice is guided by the principles of inclusion and improving the communication environment of the young people I support. I am committed to best practice and am experienced in working collaboratively with other professionals from health and education. I follow the principles that learning and communication happen best within the young person's existing natural routines and relationships, and within the context of fun, meaningful and purposeful activities.

Something Sensational About Me

I completed a degree in Psychology before studying to become a Speech and Language Therapist. I love music and cooking, and try to involve these in my therapy sessions whenever I can!
