Within these settings, I have taught a range of subject curriculums, such as English Language and Literature GCSE/iGCSE, ESOL (Pre-Entry to Level 1), Functional Skills English (Entry Level 1 to Level 2) and English in the context of literacy and communication (Pre-Entry to KS2) for secondary SEN students who could not access either the Functional Skills or GCSE curriculum. As well as, PSHE, Life and Employability Skills, Functional Skills Maths/ICT and Spanish.

My specialist experience in teaching students with behavioural needs/emotional regulation difficulties: I have several years of experience teaching students who have faced emotional and behavioural difficulties within education, due to their life experience and/or needs, especially in regards to high levels of anxiety and dis-regulation. I am very passionate about creating a safe space in my classroom and understand the importance of maintaining a high level of patience and empathy. All students deserve to receive the best level of care and support from trusted professionals who give them the opportunity to reflect on their behaviour by showing empathetic understanding and modelling boundaries, and who facilitate the development of their self-regulation and emotional intelligence. By offering this level of support, I enable my students to have the independence to pursue their interests and goals and reach their full potential.

My specialist experience supporting students to develop their independence and my experience boosting confidence and self esteem: I have a great deal of experience of teaching students with challenging behaviour and an excellent track record of establishing strong relationships and positive rapport with my students, raising their attainments levels in their core subjects and making a positive impact on their behaviour and feelings towards their education. I have also worked with students who have a history of non-engagement and school refusal as a result of not being able to access their previous setting because of their specific needs (SEN and SEMH) and due to experiencing high levels of school-induced anxiety or feelings of anxiety towards any type of formal education. To ensure re-engagement and encourage the learners to take an interest and responsibility in their learning again, it was paramount I was able to build trust and demonstrate my awareness of the difficulties they face, ensuring to adapt my approach and teaching style to best meet their needs.

My specialist experience providing fun sessions to help students engage in learning: I am very transparent and share my needs with my pupils, in relation to my hearing loss and the differentiation I require to enable me to do my job to the highest standard. I know the importance of differentiating and scaffolding my lessons to each learner’s academic ability, giving them a realistic goal to work towards as well as a challenge to push themselves, at their own pace. Wherever possible, I incorporate activities which reflect the students’ interests and allow them to draw on experience and are relatable to them, using visual aids/stimuli or ‘real life’ examples. Some examples of this include: excursions within and outside of the students community: going to see street art
in Shoreditch and attending ‘trial days’ with businesses like Pret A Manger, interactive learning sessions on Marvel films and Football Manager.
I am confident in my skills as a teacher and pride myself on being inclusive and learner-focused. As previously mentioned, I am effective at building a high level of trust and good rapport with my learners while maintaining a high level of professionalism, behaviour and classroom management. This level of trust allows the modelling of forming and sustaining effective relationships, which can be transferred and reflected on in other aspects and relationships in my students' lives.

I am skilled at developing individual targets and achievable goals for my students that identify strengths and areas for support to encourage progress.
I am creative in my lesson planning and schemes of work, as well as being a very adaptable and 'think on your feet' facilitator.

My Teaching Philosophy

I am committed to providing a safe and specially tailored environment for my students to flourish and reach their full potential, as well as nurturing them and allowing them to develop their own sense of independence and skills for life.
I aim to be the best facilitator for my students who may face obstacles to their learning, and deserve every opportunity to succeed with the appropriate, specialised support in a calm and understanding space.
I put my students, their needs and interests at the forefront of everything I do, each lesson is completely individualised so they are able to access their education in the most meaningful and engaging way for them - ensuring they feel listened to and understood at every step of their learning journey to create a sense of autonomy and responsibility which allows them to flourish.

Something Sensational About Me

My specialist experience in teaching students with anxiety, autism, and learning difficulties: In my role as an Outreach teacher, I taught a young person with autism and GDD who was a selective mute within his education setting as a result of the high levels of anxiety he experienced with anything related to formal education. Through working together and building a strong level of trust and rapport, as well as creating engaging and accessible lessons that focused on his strengths and interests, he learnt to read and began to speak with myself and then eventually, with some peers in a small group setting. Following this fantastic progress and the completion of his time with me, he went on to study a specialised SEN course at college.

I was also an SEN learner myself, losing my hearing as a teenager, I experienced my own struggles with my behaviour, coping with school life and accessing mainstream education. I have had to overcome many obstacles to reach my potential and achieve my dream of becoming a fully qualified teacher. I believe my own experience allows me to be the best facilitator for my students who also face obstacles to their learning, and deserve every opportunity to succeed with the appropriate, specialised support in a nurturing environment.

I am a lover of languages and speak Spanish and Portuguese (BR) fluently. This was possible due to the excellent support of a fantastic SEN tutor at university, my determination and 'never give up' attitude.
