I am a highly dedicated special needs teacher with a proven track record of strong performance and self-improvement. For the last 9 years I have worked with children with autism both in mainstream and special needs settings. I have a specialised profile in Autism in Early years foundation stage. Currently I teach  in an ARP (Additional Resource Provision) for children with autism. In the evenings, I tutor children with additional needs such as global developmental delay and social emotional challenges.

I am an experienced SEN teacher who has been supporting children with a varied range of special needs since 2011.  During all these years, I have worked both in mainstream and Additional Resource Provisions. As part of my professional development, on numerous occasions I have visited Special Needs schools in order to broaden my knowledge in specific areas.

I have a specialised profile in teaching children with Autism including high-functioning ASD in early years and KS1 (age 4-6). I also have experience teaching children with other needs such as Down Syndrome, Social Emotional difficulties, Williams syndrome, Memory difficulty processing,  Occupational therapy, Global developmental delay, etc. During these years, I have liaised on a daily basis with different external agencies and professionals such as Occupational and Speech and language therapists, educational and clinical psychologists etc. I have received continuous trainings which have positively contributed to my professional development. The acquisition of knowledge and skills through these years allow me to provide my students with meaningful and specialised interventions to meet their needs

During my sessions, I like to consider Montessori principles in order to promote meaningful learning. Moreover, I also like to keep a balance between promoting independence but also considering cooperation as a crucial value in life. In my lessons, I bring opportunities where children can practice their social skills such as turn taking and sharing so eventually, they will be able to acquire cooperation values such as equality and solidarity. Besides, during my sessions, cooperative play with children or adults has enormously benefited children with speech and language delay since through it, children were able to improve their receptive and productive language due to long and repetitive exposition to speech sounds. Consequently, children were able to reproduce speech sounds and vocabulary in context successfully.

According to the Montessori method, there is no differentiation between playing and learning so my sessions are enjoyable experiences for the child. I plan specific time (choosing time) where the children will choose their favourite ones from a range of simple activities or games. During this time the children lead the activity or game and without judgment I will follow their lead. I use their play time as language learning opportunities to guide if necessary or help the child if it is requested. At choosing time, I support the speech and language area as the child plays by using simple and repetitive language, making comments without demands or questions, modelling language and extending the vocabulary used.

Both personal traits such as curiosity and a strong belief in lifelong learning allow me to apply a pristine professional ethic. I like to research about my subject and read psychology and child development books. My main goal is to design interventions which provide value to my students. My creativity helps my students to connect with their internal motivation and their own creativity. In addition, my IT skills help me to create personalised resources to support their learning.

Another principle I follow is the one which states that learning is a sensory experience so I expose the child to simple activities or games where they can freely explore through their senses.

As a result of integrating these principles and strategies into my lessons, the children that I have tutored have experienced a huge progress in the speech and language area.

My Teaching Philosophy

I see my job as being to provide children with a challenging, fun and cooperative learning environment, and with tools to build their confidence in their ability to achieve, both socially and academically.

I believe that I stand out among my peers in four ways:
1. Thinking beyond the classroom: I build learning opportunities and resources not only for the classroom but also for pupils to experience at home or in cross-curricular activities. By building rapport with families and establishing positive relationships I am able to achieve results outside the classroom.

2. Initiative and drive: I am not afraid to take responsibility or put in extra work. I have a history of stepping up and learning fast in order to work above my pay grade when my employers have needed me to.

3. Personal development and knowledge sharing: I strive to be a reflective practitioner, taking time outside the working day and week to research and share resources in the SEN community. Understanding best practice helps me provide the children with the best learning experience that I can.

4. Commitment to diversity: I have spent most of my teaching career in multicultural environments. I have taught my students to embrace and celebrate differences. But I too have gained an appreciation of differences in parenting and can accommodate those while being consistent and effective as a professional.

Something Sensational About Me

I love books which help you to develop a growth mindset or improve skills. I am currently learning how to speed read and exploring techniques used to improve one's ability to read quicker than usual. At the moment I am achieving the score of 700 words per minute. This is 3 or 4 times faster than a normal reader. Besides, in my spare time, I enjoy watercolour painting.
