Specialist Experience and Skills

I have extensive experience in mainstream schools, pupil referral units and 1-2-1 tuition. During my teaching career, I have successfully worked as a Deputy Head of English (specialising in GCSE English, Year 7 transition coordinator (managing and the academic transition from primary to secondary) and cross curricular literacy interventions).

My role as literacy coordinator involved teaching a SEN nurture groups, a large percentage being dyslexic. As the majority of tasks are reading and writing in English, focused reading interventions for my nurture groups were necessary to ensure all were able to access the information presented in language and literature texts. I taught students and trained staff (to also teach students) on how to link sounds to words and blend the sounds together. In addition to this, students were taught how to connect words to meaning (through multi-sensory tasks) and how to break down the meaning of words (both as a group and independently) in order to prepare students for examinations.

Spelling is equally as important as reading in English, therefore teaching the above (sounding out words) before spelling is key. All of my lessons, including nurture groups, allow time for students to identify mistakes and correct them. I regularly encourage students to track how many words new words they have learned to spell so they’re aware of their own achievements.

I prioritise and focus on one skill at a time, a regularly monitoring progress to ensure they are ready to move on to the next skill. When teaching how to write effective sentences and paragraphs, I avoid focusing on other skills and teach writing separately. However, spelling, reading and handwriting are often revisited as starters in other lessons to enhance memory. I discovered this over time, aided students in feeling more prepared for assessments as oppose to intense last minute revision.

During one-to-one tuition, I am able to decipher a students preferred learning style and therefore tailor lessons to best suit their needs. However, in small nurture groups or large classes, where there are combination of levels and learning needs, my lessons cover all three and adopt a multi-sensory approach. As this was proven to be a success with my classes, I was then presented the opportunity to help develop a lesson framework (alongside the SEN department) to ensure all subject teachers were able incorporate multi-sensory tasks into their teaching.

When teaching students with ADHD, I can relate as I struggled with ADHD as a student and have an in-depth understanding on proven effective methods. In the past, I have taught students with ADHD in mainstream schools, however, when working at a pupil referral unit, a large proportion of the cohort had ADHD. This was an immense task because I also had to manage challenging behaviour whilst preparing students for KS3 and KS4 assessments. I employed a variety of methods but discovered that not all methods were appropriate for all students, therefore consistent differentiation was key. Now, I am able to effectively implement these strategies into my everyday teaching.

On top of this, I have worked as a senior examiner for a U.K exam board and have an in-depth knowledge of what skills are required to secure a strong pass at GCSE. I use this knowledge to ensure all students at all levels (primary to Secondary) are taught the relevant and necessary content.

I have successfully trained and prepared two students who have competed in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, both awarded first place. In addition to this, I successfully prepared multiple cohorts for their speaking and listening exams.

My Teaching Philosophy

Many of my students have commented that my lessons (seem like) they finish quickly as they find them enjoyable and interesting. I always want to ensure that students leave lessons feeling inspired and excited to learn more. All of my lessons are consistently tailored and differentiated to suit the individual needs of all learners.

Something Sensational About Me

When not teaching, I dedicate a lot of my spare time to writing screenplays and spoken word pieces!
