About Me

I have a number of years experience working with children and young adults with SEN in both an SEN and mainstream setting. My roles have been as a Teaching Assistant and Higher Level Teaching Assistant at an SEN Specialist College in Brighton and at a secondary comprehensive school in Hackney. I have supported students with a range of SEND including ADD, autism, challenging behaviour and dyslexia, and also provided pastoral support for students with social, emotional and mental health issues.

Specialist Experience and Skills

I have spent the last three years working with young people with SEN and complex needs in a variety of settings; I spent the first year working at an SEN provision in Brighton supporting 19-25 year olds with a range of SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) and the last two years working as both a Teaching Assistant and a Higher Level Teaching Assistant with students with ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs at a mainstream secondary school in Hackney.

My role at the SEN provision involved working with 19-25 year olds with SEND who were at the high-functioning end of the spectrum - I was based at an off-site project with a small group who were set to leave the college that summer. My support work involved building their confidence and independence, working on CV-writing, organisational skills, getting them work experience placements and completing a Work Skills BTEC. This preparation for leaving the college was mostly based around building their self-esteem so they could be as independent as possible after graduating.

Both roles have involved working both in groups and 1-to-1 with young people with often very challenging behaviours. I am experienced in using use de-escalation and behaviour management techniques and strategies.

At the mainstream secondary school, in addition to providing in-class support in all subjects up to Year 9 level, I have run a range of bespoke interventions for students including Literacy, handwriting, touch-typing, spelling patterns for Dyslexia and Zones of Regulation (a Speech & Language Therapy programme designed to promote emotional regulation in students). I have also provided pastoral support for students struggling with SEMH issues, and understand deeply the challenges young people can face. Finally, I also closely supported a Year 7 student with sensory needs - myself and the other TAs created a bespoke support programme for him involving use of sensory circuits, sensory toys and other regulatory tools in order for him to manage through the school day. Many of the students on the SEN caseload at Haggerston had additional sensory needs, so we had to find more and more creative ways to provide sensory stimulation in order to allow them to focus in a mainstream educational setting.

Through this work, I have gained valuable insight into how to effectively differentiate school work at a range of levels to make it accessible for young people with a variety of complex additional needs and mental health issues, and also to support them to strive towards confidence and independence in both their academic and personal lives.

Furthermore, my most recent role as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in Hackney has involved working closely with external agencies and parents to ensure the best provision is in place for children with a range of needs.

I have been involved in running a series of accessible club nights for adults with learning disabilities in Woolwich over the past year, and I've also done voluntary work with Heart N Soul in Deptford (a charity who run music/arts classes for adults with learning disabilities). Combining music with supporting SEN children and adults is definitely a route I want to explore further in the future.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the end goal of teaching and supporting young people is to promote independence and to allow them to interact with the world with confidence and happiness.

Something Sensational About Me

As well as working with children and young people with SEN I write, record and release music and have performed live in venues and festivals in the UK and Europe over the last 4 years.
