About Me

I have been teaching for over 20 years and the majority of that has been in a variety of primary schools within SEN, such as special primary schools and additional resource provisions within mainstream schools. I enjoy teaching all children in all primary subjects, especially the ages of nursery school to 11 years old.   I supported and planned for children with ASC/ASD, ADD/ADHD, behavioural difficulties, emotional difficulties, social difficulties, Downs Syndrome, and global learning difficulties.

Specialist Experience and Skills

My love for working with children who have SEN started at university where I supported a professor in his phonics research.  Seeing the children enjoy the phonics games and have fun learning was a great start to my career.

I have taught children with pre-diagnosis- supporting  and assessing them and successfully achieving an EHCp for all.  I have taught children with Autism, Downs Syndrome, complex learning needs, behavioural, social and emotional difficulties and Global Delay.  While teaching a variety of learners,  I have engaged and worked along side Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologists, Play and Art Therapists.

I love finding new resources to compliment or reinforce a concept or lesson.  I plan in advance, but use the previous lesson’s outcome to support next steps, such as revisiting the prior learning to consolidate or finding a different way to teach the learning objective  as was not understood or user friendly enough. Through hands on experiences, I aim to provide fun learning, such as using sand to write letter shapes in or using Attention Autism to support communication through attending attention grabbing, creative adult led activities.

All programmes are individualised for  the learner using my knowledge and skill, as well as incorporating other professionals input/programmes. I like to use PECs,  Makaton and TEACCH to support lessons where the learner requires such support.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe in fun, hands on learning and following a child’s interest. Learning through play fosters a strong connection for children and  allows them to explore at their own pace.  Every child has the capability to learn and being a part of that journey is so rewarding, seeing them grow and learn from where they started.
