I am a fun and creative teacher; I have 12 years experience in mainstream schools and 1-2-1 tuition. During my English teaching career, I have successfully worked as a Deputy Head of Year for a large cohort of students with an array of needs and as a literacy support teacher. I also have experience in directing a play therapy group for children with special needs and continuously strive to enhance my professional development. Personally, I have a close family member with Autism who is non-verbal and so am keenly aware of the challenges that special needs bring to a family.

My role as literacy teacher involved teaching SEN nurture groups, a large percentage being dyslexic alongside having autism/ADD/ADHD/PDA and a range of other needs. As the majority of tasks in schools involve reading and writing, focused reading interventions for my nurture groups were necessary to ensure all students were able to access the information presented in texts. I taught students and trained other staff on how to link sounds and meaning to words. In my lessons I allow time for students to identify mistakes and correct them. I regularly encourage students to track how many words new words they have learned to spell to highlight their achievement.

I prioritise and focus on one skill at a time, regularly monitoring progress to ensure they are ready to move on to the next skill. However, spelling, reading and handwriting are often revisited as starters in other lessons to enhance memory. I believe students are most successful when they have clear expectations of what is expected of them and have achievable goals. Feeling successful and supported is paramount to allow a student to thrive and to develop as a young person.

One-to-one tuition allows the opportunity to decipher students preferred learning style and therefore tailor lessons to best suit their needs. I enjoy the challenge of differentiating work so that pupils can gain the most from their learning. For instance, I have developed a range of ways to engage pupils via starters in maths and word games.

My lessons are always packed with a variety of creative and fun activities so pupils are stimulated throughout. I have a strong passion for teaching comprehension and inference skills and I enjoy the challenge of developing pupils' understanding not only the world around them, but themselves. Additionally, I find working with children with SEN to be fascinating as they have such a unique and wonderful way of seeing the world. I feel privileged to tap into their strengths and explore innovative ways to enhance their social and emotional intelligence. I relish the opportunity to teach pupils communication skills as it allows me to push the boundaries of the teaching/learning process in a positive way.

Throughout my teaching career I have taught a number of 'progress' classes who I have prepared for assessments. I have employed a range of strategies to manage challenging behaviour in order to present avenues for each student to access learning; consistent differentiation being key. I have a keen understanding of strategies and interventions to develop social communication and language skills through my working alongside speech and language therapists, OT's and a range of other educational specialists. I have a proven record of being able to motivate and inspire students; boosting self-esteem my core aim. Personable and friendly, I pride myself on my ability to build relationships with my students and have patience and empathy in abundance.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe children learn best when they feel comfortable with the adult they are working with so developing a positive relationship with the child and gaining their trust is imperative. I strive to reassure students that I will treat them with kindness. I feel that following the interests of the child is an effective method to encourage engagement and I relish sourcing creative means of linking learning objectives to the child's likes so they are allowed to learn through fun. Children are wonderfully creative, possessing the ability to imagine what we, as adults, cannot imagine anymore and they have the ability to learn and develop remarkably when teaching is focused on their needs. Fundamentally, all children have a right to succeed and it is our responsibility as educators to ensure that we do all that we can to create positive and memorable learning experiences for the young people in our care. I aspire to create a life-long love of learning.
