I am a qualified teacher and hold a 1st Class Honours PGCE in Chemistry and Biology. Having studied a number of Science subjects throughout school and university I feel it is so important for Science to “come to life” in order to really appreciate and develop students’ conceptual understanding. I have taught Science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) to GCSE Level in both Ireland and the UK. This includes teaching the iGCSE content. I have always used practical methodologies where appropriate as well as interactive digital resources such as animations, simulations and videos. I am a former Exams Officer and Assessor for a number of exam boards.

With regard to exam technique, I tutor students on how to approach exam questions; highlighting important key words and styles of questioning, providing examples of model answers and focussing on timing. I also believe that it is important to encourage students to self-evaluate and reflect on any errors in order to embed independence and confidence. It is essential to understand how the marking process works and how examiners mark papers. We also work on revision skills and how to best utilise those crucial days before the exam.

I have significant experience in working with students who require a particularly structured lesson (most notably those with ASD and ADHD/ADD) where objectives, expectations and boundaries are clear from the outset. I believe in genuine positive reinforcement and the establishment of a positive rapport through humour. This is done through gaining an understanding of the students interests and the use of structured breaks throughout the lesson.

I am a very passionate and positive teacher with over a decade of experience within in a number of educational settings. I have worked with students in both classroom environments as a well as a 1:1 tutoring basis from Primary level through to Adult Education. My background is quite a scientific one, having also completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and additional qualifications below.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe learning should be fun, interactive and varied. I use digital technologies in my lessons to engage and inspire my students. I believe that a little humour also goes a long way!

I am also passionate about the wider curriculum and the pastoral elements of education. There are so many factors which impact on learning so I do ensure that I truly understand the needs of each and every student.

Choose me if…

….you want a tutor who will work with you and your child to ensure that they are fulfilling their potential in a positive and meaningful way.

Something sensational about me

I have travelled to nearly 50 countries. I just love immersing myself in new cultures and I have learned so much over the years.

My passions include fitness and wellbeing, travelling, arts and culture and food. I also love being outdoors and getting mucky (I grew up on a rural farm!). I am also a little bit obsessed with dogs and I am very excited to announce the arrival of my new cavachon puppy Dougal!
