Experience, training and skills

Over the fifteen years that I have been teaching, twelve have been in primary schools and I have taught mostly in the Key Stage 1 areas. I have an excellent grasp of early reading strategies, particularly Phonics and I have created many resources which have supported many EAL and SEND pupils to develop their reading skills. I have particular Reading Recovery training which has given me additional strategies and resources to support less confident / struggling younger readers.

I have a Maths degree and particularly enjoy Maths, and have tutored children up to Key Stage 3. I particularly focus on using manipulatives such as number lines, Numicon, dienes blocks, ten frames, etc to help develop students understanding based on using the concrete-pictorial-abstract model of mastering maths in primary schools.

As a school teacher I receive continuous professional development and I am up to date with the current pedagogy that comes with the teaching profession. I am always developing my practice and it is evident with the success I have had with my students in the various schools I have worked in as well as the students I have tutored.

My Teaching Philosophy

I have been teaching and tutoring for about fifteen years. I am a reliable and honest person, with excellent communication skills and I hope to support families in unlocking the true potential of every student I am fortunate enough to teach, whether it be in schools as a class teacher or as a tutor on a one-to-one basis.

My teaching philosophy is based on a partnership with the student's parents/carers - they know their child best and regular communication with them enables me to plan and get the best out of the student. Knowing a student's interests and passions helps me develop a good rapport with them and I aim to personalise my teaching to make them excited about their learning as well as them becoming successful learners! I employ a range of strategies and never 'put a ceiling' on a student's potential as every student is capable of everything and anything. I aim to incorporate visual, audio and kinaesthetic approaches to teach students.

Something sensational about me

As a father of identical twin girls, I always get told I got the best buy one, get one free deal! (It doesn’t always feel like it though, but I am sure I was blessed and have got a good deal!!)
