Experience, training and skills

I am an highly experienced primary school teacher and senior leader with a real passion for learning.

I have taught in a variety of Inner London schools and worked with children with complex learning social and emotional needs; creating exciting and engaging learning experiences that really challenge the learner to achieve.

I have taught many children who have ADD/ ADHD throughout my career. I have worked in an inpatient unit where substantial numbers of children were diagnosed with ADD, or Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This required me to be firm, but kind in my approach to behaviour management and to be aware of the needs and interests of the learner, so as to produce lessons that the children really wanted to take part in. As a teacher in a mainstream school I taught many children who had barriers to learning and required careful planning and structuring of the school day to allow them to anticipate what would happen next and to tap into their learning styles. As a Deputy Head and Head Teacher I was often the person who would deal with the child after things had gone wrong in the classroom. This meant dealing with difficult situations calmly and offering solutions that would allow all concerned to continue with learning. This could include taking the child for a one to one session to re-present the learning and support them pastorally.

My interest in learners facing difficulty is also highly personal. I have a close family member who has Asperger’s Syndrome and feel passionately that when children’s needs are met they are capable of achieving great things.

I believe that education should provide children with the support and challenge they need to shine. Learning should be fun, engaging, relevant and practical.

My Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is to put the child at the centre of everything that I do; ensuring that they make the best possible progress. To this end learning experiences are tailored to the needs of the individual and presented in a way that they understand and are able to engage with. What does the child know/ understand? What do they need to know next? How can that journey best be achieved? How does the child and parent/ carer know how well they have done and what they need to do next?

Choose me if…
