Experience, training and skills

I am an experienced teacher who has always worked with students with Special Educational Needs. I am calm and empathetic and pride myself on making good positive relationships with young people while at the same time having high expectations of all students. I believe strongly that all students have a right to reach their potential no matter what their barriers to learning might be.

More about me…

In my spare time I love reading and walking with my two greyhounds.

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching Philosophy is fluid in the sense that it is always informed by the student that I work with. I plan an individual programme that meets the needs of the student and suits their learning style. So for some students this may be more play based and for others more structured. I have high expectations of my learners but at the same time ensure that I introduce new concepts when they are ready. In this way prior learning is consolidated, success is experienced and students develop self confidence and self belief.

Something sensational about me

I have worked with students in many different contexts over my career to date.  In South Africa before I moved to the U.K. I worked with students with Down’s Syndrome providing a curriculum that met the needs of my students and allowed them to integrate into main stream classes.  Moving to the U.K. I supported students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and later moved to a school to work with children who experienced severe learning difficulties.  I progressed from this to leading a Key Stage 1 Speech and Language base.  During this time I obtained my dyslexia qualifications.  After obtaining these qualifications I led a Specific Learning Difficulties Base (dyslexia) where we advised  schools and provided training on how to support students with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.  Wanting more direct contact with students I moved to my present role where I support students with various difficulties in a mainstream school.

My qualifications include a PGCE, a Psychology Honours Degree, a Level 5 Diploma to teach students with Dyslexia and a Level 7 Diploma to assess students for Dyslexia.
