I studied English and Psychology at university. I have eight years’ experience of working with people with learning difficulties in various settings. I started out working as an activity worker with adults with learning difficulties-this role showed me the importance of building trust with the people I support as well as with their families. I then went on to work as a teaching assistant with students with various needs- autism, emotional and behavioural difficulties, global delay etc. Although I enjoyed this work I found that I wanted to be involved in students’ learning at a deeper level and decided to do my PGCE in Primary Education. I completed my NQT year at a mainstream school in North London and although I thoroughly enjoyed it I missed working with children with learning difficulties. I worked in a school for children with Autism before joining my current school which caters for students with complex needs ranging from ages seven through to nineteen. My class is made up of students ranging in age from twelve to fifteen. I also get the opportunity to work with other classes and experience different age groups and abilities.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe children learn best when they feel comfortable with the adult they are working with. I place key importance in developing a positive relationship with the child and gaining their trust-I want them to feel reassured that I will treat them with kindness. I have found that following the interests of the child is a good way to get them to engage with a topic; I find creative ways of linking learning objectives to the child's likes so that they get to learn through having fun. I like to make sessions sensory where possible and take advantage of a student's learning style (visual, kinesthetic etc). I love art and try to use it as much as possible. I enjoy incorporating music and dance into activities also.

Something sensational about me

I love to plan fun, sensory lessons around art, music and play.
