Experience, training and skills
I have just recently embarked on the most exciting adventure, moving here in London, working as an Autism Advisor and Specialist Leader of Education. This role sees me advising schools (Nursery to KS5) on inclusive classroom practice, accessing the curriculum, understanding autism and associated behaviours, developing communication and social skills, sensory regulation strategies and delivering training to upskill school staff.
Prior to this, I have taught in an SEMH mixed KS1/2 Class, a KS2 SLD class and a range of KS1/KS2 ASC specific classes. I have worked in conjunction with highly skilled team of teachers, SALT, OT, EP and CAMHS workers. I have worked with children with a vast range of sensory, communication and learning difficulties. I have introduced the children, families and staff I have worked with to a range of communication methods such as PECS, High Tech Devices and communication books. They have also been taught many regulation techniques may it be self or mutual regulation.
To ensure my practice and skills remain current, I have attended sensory integration, SCERTs and PECS training. To develop my expertise, I have also visited and spent time in outstanding schools such as Columbia Grange (Sunderland), Thomas Bewick (Newcastle) and some schools in Australia when travelling. Whilst working as a class teacher, I have developed sound knowledge and understanding on how to support children with SLD, SEMH, ASC and their associated difficulties. I have developed my knowledge and understanding of child development, how this impacts on learning and functioning and then adapted my teaching in line with this. I have also developed a secure knowledge and understanding of assessment, report writing and target setting.
My Teaching Philosophy
My true passion that underpins everything I believe in as a teacher is to develop the holistic child. By this, I mean not only developing the child's academic ability but also developing the child socially, physically, emotionally and behaviourally. I do this in a discrete manner, often through play or in a real life context whereby the children don't even realise they are learning!
I also believe in having high expectations of all children and find this is something the children respond positively too.
The final aspect of teaching that underpins my practise is the relationship between home and learning. I believe in developing strong relationships with all of those around the child and involving them in the child's learning journey, as much as possible.
Choose me if…
